Knife Care & Maintenance Guide

Purpose-Made Gear Deserves Purposeful Care.

Every knife from Tatle Gear is built to perform and last โ€” but like any quality tool, itโ€™ll serve you best when cared for properly.
Below are a few simple habits that keep your blade, handle, and sheath in top shape for years of use.

General Use

  • Use your knife for cutting only. Donโ€™t pry, hammer, or throw it โ€” blades are designed for precision, not leverage.

  • Avoid twisting the tip or using it as a screwdriver. This can weaken or snap the point.

  • Cut on appropriate surfaces โ€” wood, leather, or soft cutting mats. Avoid metal, stone, or concrete.

  • Keep your knife clean and dry after every use. A quick wipe prevents corrosion and residue buildup.

Folding Knives

  • Rinse and dry thoroughly after exposed to saltwater, dirt, or blood.

  • Apply a drop of oil to the pivot and locking surfaces to keep action smooth and to protect your knife after it gets wet.

  • Check screws periodically and tighten gently with the correct driver if needed.

  • Avoid over-tightening. It can affect blade alignment or deployment.

Fixed Blades

  • To Clean. Use warm water and mild soap work well โ€” just dry completely.

  • Lightly oil the blade to prevent rust (especially on carbon steel).

  • Inspect handle pins or fasteners regularly to ensure nothing has loosened over time.

  • Store in a dry environment. Avoid leaving knives in damp sheds, vehicles, or sheaths for long periods.

Kydex Sheaths

  • Keep the sheath clean โ€” debris or grit can scratch the blade finish.

  • Rinse with warm water and dry fully before re-inserting the knife.

  • Avoid high heat (dashboard, near campfire, etc.) โ€” Kydex can warp if overheated.

Leather Sheaths

  • Wipe clean and allow to air-dry after exposure to moisture.

  • Never store your knife long-term inside a wet sheath โ€” it can trap moisture and cause rust.

  • Condition the leather periodically with a quality leather balm or oil to prevent drying and cracking.

  • Avoid prolonged sunlight or heat that may shrink or harden the leather.

Storage

  • Store your knife in a dry place with good airflow.

  • Lightly oil blades before long-term storage.

  • Keep out of reach of children and untrained users.

Our Advice

Treat your knife like a tool youโ€™ll pass down โ€” not something disposable.
A few minutes of care will keep it ready for the next season, the next field, and the next generation.
